I am thrilled to announce the release of ‘Levelling the playing field’, a report produced by Renaissance and Progressive Britain detailing how best Government can help small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) thrive.

99.8% of Britain’s 5.5 million businesses are classed as small or medium-sized. And yet through the 2010s they were denied the support of Government to grow, innovate and lead. Our new Labour Government is absolutely committed to re-balancing the scales and actively aiding SMBs to thrive. Last month, I presented the report to the Minister for Small Businesses, Gareth Thomas MP and we are honoured that Mr Thomas contributed a foreword to our report. Having discussed the report with my colleagues on the Business and Trade Committee during our Tamworth Small Business Roundtable Tour, I am positive it will be a tremendous asset in formulating SMB policy.

Our conclusions were not formulated in isolation in some closed-off Whitehall office, Renaissance and Progressive Britain hosted roundtables with SMB directors the length and breadth of the country, to ensure the solutions we propose serve the needs of our country’s entrepreneurs. I had the privilege of hosting my own roundtable discussion alongside West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker and I am delighted to see how the feedback from Tamworth businessowners has made its way into the report and onto the desks of Government ministers.
