I am launching survey in response to the concern of the cost of business energy and the behaviour of suppliers and brokers. I have been horrified by the stories of constituents and my own dealings on behalf of them and their businesses, and through my work on the Business and Trade Select Committee hearing from business around the country. You do not need to be a constituent of mine to complete this.
Business energy prices remain higher than before the energy crisis, around £5000 higher than pre crisis.
Some companies have told me that their bills have in some cases quadrupled.
But it isn’t just the cost – the experience of dealing with energy companies is for some even worse than the extortionate prices.
I have heard continued claims by businesses that the business energy sector is rife with malpractice, including:
high pressure sales tactics,
unfair pricing,
incorrect billing,
misleading contracts,
incorrect meter readings or inaccurate meters,
heavy handed legal threats,
ignoring ombudsman findings or processes,
abuse of powers to disconnect supply,
or actions taken without fair and proper procedure.
These are reported to have been the activity of both brokers and the companies supplying the energy.
The energy crisis brought into focus just how unscrupulous these companies are.
If you are a business with a story to tell – please provide your details so that I can compile these and share them with both the Secretary of state for Business and with the Energy Secretary. I will also share my findings with the select committees for both business and energy.
I will also share your experience with your constituency MP if you would like it to be passed on.
Thank you for sharing your experiences, everything you share will help highlight this issue,
Best Wishes,
Sarah Edwards MP
